(Durga Puja at the Roychowdhury Family Home, Baruipur, South 24 Parganas

Durga Puja at the Roychowdhury Family Home, Baruipur, South 24 Parganas
As one approaches Rasmath in Baruipur, the ravages of time become unmistakable. The once-magnificent Roychowdhury zamindari has gradually lost much of its former grandeur. Scattered across the sprawling estate, crumbling walls, fragments of collapsed gateways and dilapidated temples stand as silent witnesses to a glorious past. Even the gateway leading to the Durga Dalan, the traditional courtyard where the Goddess is worshipped, bears the scars of neglect. Its deteriorating structure has been repaired as best as possible with a layer of cement. Fresh whitewash and the clearing of overgrown vegetation suggest that preparations for the upcoming Durga Puja are underway. Amid the ruins, there is a quiet sense of anticipation, as though the ancestral estate is waiting to come alive once more.
Located in Baruipur, South 24 Parganas, the Roychowdhury family home was once the centre of an extensive zamindari. Today, much of its former splendour has faded, but the flame of its aristocratic heritage continues to burn. Generations have witnessed changes in lifestyles, professions and places of residence, yet the family remains steadfast in preserving Bengal's rich tradition of celebrating its many festivals throughout the year. Durga Puja, in particular, continues to hold a special place in their hearts.
Dating back approximately 350 years, the Durga Puja at the Roychowdhury residence was initiated by Rajballabh Roychowdhury. The history of this ancestral celebration is also associated with two celebrated figures in Bengali literature—Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay and Michael Madhusudan Dutt. According to family members, Bankim Chandra visited the Roychowdhury residence and stayed there during his tenure as District Magistrate of the region. Family accounts also preserve memories of Michael Madhusudan Dutt, fondly remembered as Madhukabi, visiting the ancestral home.
Preparations for Durga Puja begin with the advent of Devipaksha, the auspicious fortnight dedicated to the Goddess. The invocation of the Divine Mother begins with the recitation of the Chandi, setting the tone for the days of worship that follow. Gradually, the rituals unfold, culminating in the final farewell to the Goddess. As the idol is prepared in the Thakur Dalan and the last-minute arrangements gather pace, the old estate begins to resonate with the familiar spirit of the festival. For a few days, the fading grandeur of the zamindari gives way to the warmth and vitality of a living tradition.
An equally significant aspect of this heritage is the continuity of professional relationships maintained across generations. Idol-makers, traditional musicians and haluikars (confectioners) involved in the festivities often come from families whose ancestors served the Roychowdhurys during earlier generations. Their continued participation lends a distinctive character to the celebration, preserving bonds that extend far beyond professional associations. Although the old zamindari structure has largely crumbled, these longstanding relationships remain intact, connecting the present with the past.
The tradition of animal sacrifice also continues at the Roychowdhury family's Durga Puja, preserving another aspect of the ancestral rituals.
In earlier times, the departure of the Goddess was accompanied by the release of a Nilkantha bird, or Indian roller. According to popular belief, sighting this bird is considered auspicious, and its association with Bijoya Dashami has long been a part of Bengali tradition. Today, as Nilkantha birds have become difficult to obtain, other birds are released in their place, allowing the symbolic gesture to continue in a modified form.
Today, most members of the extended family live in different cities across the world, their professional commitments keeping them far from their ancestral home. Yet, when Durga Puja arrives, geographical distances seem less significant. The annual celebration draws them together through shared memories, inherited customs and an enduring emotional connection with their roots.
At the Roychowdhury residence in Baruipur, the crumbling walls may speak of a fading zamindari, but the annual homecoming of the Goddess tells a different story—a story of continuity, family bonds and a heritage that refuses to disappear with time.
