(Durga Puja at Bose Bari, Khalisani, Chandannagar, Hooghly)

Durga Puja at Bose Bari, Khalisani, Chandannagar, Hooghly

When one thinks of Chandannagar, the first thing that usually comes to mind is its famous Jagaddhatri Puja. Yet, this historic town in Hooghly is also home to a Durga Puja tradition dating back more than five centuries—the Durga Puja of Bose Bari in Khalisani. According to the family’s traditional account, the puja entered its 519th year in 2026.

Towards the end of the fifteenth century, Karunamoy Basu travelled by boat with his family from Tamralipta, present-day Tamluk in East Midnapore, and arrived at Bilkuli village on the banks of the Saraswati River in Hooghly. He settled there to pursue business. Later, through his cordial relations with the rulers of the time, he was entrusted with the responsibility of Khalisani village, where he built his residence.

He first established a temple dedicated to Vishalakshi, the family’s presiding deity. About ten years later, he initiated the Durga Puja. After Karunamoy Basu’s death, his eldest son, Debidas, and subsequent generations continued the tradition. In 1702, Debidas’s great-grandson, Sahasram Basu, built a magnificent mansion for his eight sons. The sprawling residence, still known as Atbari, stands as a reminder of the family’s heritage. The Durga Puja continues to be celebrated in the five-arched thakur dalan, or traditional courtyard shrine, of this historic house.

One of the principal attractions of the Durga Puja at Bose Bari, Khalisani, is the exquisite idol of Goddess Durga. The image is crafted within the thakur dalan itself. Adorned with shimmering tinsel decorations, antique gold ornaments and silver weapons, the goddess draws devotees in large numbers every year. According to the family, many of these ornaments have been handed down through generations.

The puja also preserves the participation of several families who have been associated with it for generations. The drummers, priests and idol-makers continue to fulfil their traditional roles, maintaining an unbroken connection with the past. The family of Gokul Chandra Pal, too, has been crafting the idols for this household for many years.

One of the most distinctive rituals takes place on Saptami, the seventh day of Durga Puja, when the Nabapatrika is worshipped. Instead of being taken to the Ganges, the Nabapatrika is carried to the banks of the Saraswati River. The custom commemorates the journey of the family’s founding ancestor, Karunamoy Basu, who arrived in Khalisani by this very river route. The ritual continues to honour that historical connection.

The Saraswati was once an important waterway for riverine trade. Although it has now dwindled to a narrow stream, its historical significance remains alive in the traditions of the Bose family’s Durga Puja.

The ritual of worshipping the framework of the idol, traditionally performed on Janmashtami, is now observed on Rath Yatra. From Pratipada, the first day of the lunar fortnight, the ceremonial invocation of the goddess begins, accompanied by recitations from the Chandi. Kumari Puja, the worship of a young girl as the embodiment of the divine feminine, is performed on Ashtami. During Sandhi Puja, family members come together to light 108 brass lamps.

The goddess is offered cooked rice, fruits and sweets in the morning, followed by luchi, sandesh and naru in the evening. The special Navami bhog consists of khichuri, alur dom, five varieties of fried vegetables, mixed vegetable curry, payesh and chutney.

On Navami, the rituals include dhuno porano, in which fragrant incense is burned, followed by a Navagraha homa, a fire ritual dedicated to the nine celestial bodies. On Dashami, the final day of the festival, the rituals of Devi Baran, Sindoor Khela and Kanak Anjali are performed before preparations for immersion begin.

Before the immersion, the idol is taken to the temple of Vishalakshi, the family’s presiding deity, where the goddess is worshipped once again. In earlier times, the idol itself was immersed in the Saraswati River. Today, it is transported by vehicle to the designated immersion ghat. However, the principal ritual pot, or ghat, used in the puja is still immersed in the Saraswati, preserving a final and poignant link with the river that shaped the family’s history.

Thus, the Durga Puja at Bose Bari, Khalisani, is much more than an annual religious celebration. It is a living tradition that brings together family history, ancestral memories and centuries-old rituals, keeping alive the legacy of a heritage deeply intertwined with the history of the Saraswati River.
