(Durga Puja at the Durgacharan Rakshit House, Chandannagar, Hooghly)

Durga Puja at the Durgacharan Rakshit House, Chandannagar, Hooghly
The Rakshit family originally hailed from Bhandarhati, near Dhaniakhali in Hooghly district. The family’s Durga Puja was initiated by Gobindachandra Rakshit. Although the exact year of its inception is unknown, it is believed to have begun around 1841.
A family legend is associated with the origin of the puja. Gobindachandra Rakshit and his wife prayed to Goddess Durga for a son. When their wish was fulfilled, they named their child Durgacharan after the goddess. In time, the family also adopted the tradition of incorporating the suffix ‘Charan’ into the names of its male members.
Durgacharan Rakshit was a prominent nineteenth-century businessman and philanthropist of Chandannagar. Alongside his successful import-export business, he undertook various charitable initiatives, including establishing a free school and a dispensary, distributing food grains among the poor, and assisting pilgrims on their journeys to holy places. He also served as the mayor of Chandannagar and as a judge in the local court. In 1896, he was awarded the Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur, France’s highest civilian and military distinction. Notably, Durgacharan Rakshit was the first Indian to receive this honour.
After establishing himself in business, Durgacharan expanded the family’s ancestral house and subsequently built the Thakur Dalan, the ceremonial courtyard dedicated to the worship of the goddess. Following his death, his eldest son, Shyamacharan Rakshit, with the assistance of his younger brother Tarinicharan, further expanded the Thakur Dalan.
The Thakur Dalan at the Rakshit house is modest in size, featuring three arches, two windows at the rear and a small courtyard in front. A verandah runs along the upper floor, from where the women of the household would presumably watch the rituals and festivities.
The Durga idol is adorned with traditional daker saaj, the decorative embellishments historically made using metallic foil and other ornamental materials. The weapons held by the goddess are made of brass, while her crown is crafted from silver. Among the gold and silver ornaments used to adorn the deity are several pieces that have been preserved and used across generations.
Preparations for the idol begin on Janmashtami with the ritual worship of the framework. A new framework is made for the goddess every year. From Panchami to the morning of Dashami, family members observe a vegetarian diet.
The ritual of Bodhan, invoking the goddess, takes place on Shashthi. The Nabapatrika rituals are performed at a ghat near the Hooghly River. The Nabapatrika procession is accompanied by an enormous silver umbrella, adding a distinctive touch to the traditional observance.
The bhog offered to the goddess reflects the familiar culinary traditions of an old Bengali household. Offerings include luchi, coconut naru, sweets made from thickened milk and various kinds of fried sweets. Devotees visiting the puja also bring sweets as offerings to the goddess.
One of the most distinctive features of the bhog arrangements is the Naibedya Ghar, a separate room beside the Thakur Dalan dedicated to preparing the rice offerings for the goddess. Large quantities of rice are purchased from the market for this purpose. The offerings are arranged in large wooden trays known as barakosh and on brass plates. The sheer volume of rice naibedya prepared for the puja necessitates a separate room for its preparation.
Kumari Puja, the worship of a young girl as a manifestation of the divine feminine, is performed on Ashtami. Earthen lamps and traditional lamp stands are used during Sandhi Puja. After the ritual concludes, ten to twelve women participate in the dhuno porano ceremony, in which incense is burned as part of the traditional observances.
Dashami morning brings another distinctive set of customs. After observing a vegetarian diet from Panchami onwards, family members conclude the period of abstinence by eating fish from a local pond. The women of the household then participate in Debi Boron, a ritual bidding farewell to the goddess. This is followed by sindoor khela, the traditional play with vermilion, and the ceremonial farewell to the deity. Family members then perform Kanak Anjali, offering rice and other items as a symbolic gesture of farewell.
Finally, the immersion of the idol in the waters of the Hooghly brings the festivities to a close, marking the end of another year of this longstanding family tradition.
