(Durga Puja at the Dharanidhar Mallick Residence, Kadamtala, Howrah)

Durga Puja at the Dharanidhar Mallick Residence, Kadamtala, Howrah

A short distance past the Dakshin Batra Shyama Puja Club in the Kadamtala area of Howrah, one comes across Dharanidhar Mallick Lane. The very name of the street seems to hold within it the history of a family. One of the brightest chapters of that history is the Durga Puja of the Mallick family, which celebrates its 125th year this year.

According to family sources, the worship of Goddess Durga at this residence was initiated in 1309 Bengali Era by the late Dharanidhar Mallick. More than a century has passed since then. The puja, begun by an ancestor, has now been carried forward by the fifth and sixth generations of the family. Despite the passage of so many years, the present members have carefully preserved the essential traditions of the puja. And therein lies its unique charm.

The first thing that catches one's eye when looking at the Durga idol in the Mallick household is its traditional ekchala form, in which the Goddess and her divine entourage are depicted together beneath a single arched backdrop. Adorned with a traditional chalchitra and daker saaj, the Goddess evokes the familiar image of Durga Puja in Bengal's old aristocratic households. Amid today's celebrations, increasingly dominated by elaborate themes, this traditional idol seems to represent a different era. There are no spectacular displays of novelty here; instead, there is a heartfelt effort to hold on to tradition. Within the Goddess's familiar form, the memories of generations past seem to live on.

The preparations for Durga Puja at this household also begin according to established customs. On the auspicious occasion of Radhashtami, the ritual worship of the idol's framework marks the beginning of the image-making process. The idol is completed in approximately a month. The Goddess's worship formally begins on Mahashashthi with the ritual of Bodhan, invoking and awakening the divine presence. From then on, the entire household is enveloped in the festive spirit. For the family, these few days are not merely about religious observances; they are also an opportunity to reunite, revisit cherished memories and introduce the younger generations to their family's heritage.

The traditional households of Bengal each have their own distinctive customs, which eventually become an integral part of their identity. One such special feature of the Mallick family's Durga Puja is the ritual offering of sandesh and manda sweets during Sandhi Puja. The Goddess is adorned with gold and silver jewellery, adding to the grandeur of the traditional idol. Outside the house, the nahabat plays its ceremonial music, blending the sounds of a bygone era with the festive atmosphere. The nahabat once played a significant role in the Durga Puja celebrations of Bengal's aristocratic households, and this arrangement stands as a reminder of that enduring tradition.

Dashami, too, has its own set of customs. Before the immersion of the idol, family members visit a ghat along the Ganges to perform Ganga Puja. This is followed by worship at the Siddheshwaritala Temple. Only then comes the moment to bid farewell to the Goddess. As the idol is taken for immersion, joy gives way to a feeling of heaviness in the heart. Yet, in the Bengali tradition of Durga Puja, farewell never signifies a final goodbye. It carries within it the promise of the Goddess's return and the anticipation of another year.
