(Nrityagopal Smritimandir and Chandannagar Pustakagar, Chandannagar, Hooghly)

(English Version)

Mention "Chandannagar," and one immediately visualizes the gentle aura of the French colonial era, a blend of the Ganges and history. A shining star in the city's cultural map is the "Nrityagopal Smritimandir and Chandannagar Pustakagar." It is not merely a building, but a witness to a century-and-a-half-long journey of education and culture in Chandannagar.

The journey of the Chandannagar Library began on October 1, 1873, at the hands of Mr. Jadunath Palit. It was born in a rented house in Urdibazar, then a French colony. Initially, the library's survival was uncertain; it functioned by moving from one house to another, from Nichu Palli to Kansaripara. Jadunath Babu was a theatre enthusiast. Along with his friends Motilal Seth and Mahendranath Nandi, he had even formed a theatre group. However, for the sake of saving the library, he sold off his beloved theatre equipment.

The credit for providing a permanent home to this library goes to Mr. Harihar Seth, a prominent figure, social worker, and the first mayor of Chandannagar. In 1920, he took the initiative to build a palatial building in Bagbazar in memory of his father, Nityagopal Seth. Besides investing the majority of the funds, the design of the building was Harihar Babu’s own creation. However, a small but interesting mistake occurred—although his father’s name was "Nityagopal," it was mistakenly engraved as "Nrityagopal" on the plaque. Though noticed during the inauguration, there was no opportunity to correct it. That is how it is known today as "Nrityagopal Smritimandir."

The architectural style of the building is a beautiful fusion of local Bengali tradition and colonial European style. The Corinthian columns used carry the hallmark of European architecture. The design of its entrance bears a striking resemblance to the semi-circular arches and the five curved decked steps in front of the Aghorchandra Seth School. Situated south of the Bagbazar intersection on G.T. Road, just before the Court More stop, this elegant building is like a gem in the heart of Chandannagar.

Over its 150-year history, the library has hosted luminaries such as Rabindranath Tagore, Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Acharya Prafulla Chandra Ray, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, Abanindranath Tagore, and Satyendra Nath Bose. Rabindranath Tagore himself delivered speeches here. Every room here still seems to echo with the footsteps and murmurs of the discussions held by these legends.

Currently, there are about 70,000 books, including nearly 31,000 rare books and manuscripts. The collection of French-era literature, ancient manuscripts written on handmade paper, hand-written magazines, and old daily newspapers is invaluable to researchers.

Despite the current shortage of staff, the city’s book lovers have not given up. While the librarian attends on Mondays and Wednesdays, the rest of the days are managed by a group of local readers called "Library Lovers" and volunteers who have kept the library alive with great devotion. They even set a precedent during the COVID-19 pandemic by delivering books through a mobile library service.

This center of history, education, and culture in Chandannagar still stands with all its glory. The pride of Chandannagar, this memorial is not just a room for books; it is our roots, our heritage. Even today, the 150th-anniversary celebrations and the crowds at the processions prove that even in the age of technology and social media, Chandannagar continues to love its books and libraries just the same.
