(The Traditional Durga Puja of the Ghoshal Family, Konnagar, Hooghly)

Located near the Raj Rajeswari Yuva Samiti in Konnagar, Hooghly district, is one of the region's most illustrious traditional aristocratic families. In 1454, when this region of Bengal was a desolate wilderness surrounded by dense forests, the Ghoshal family lit the first earthen lamp on this very soil. Dating back to the era of the Lodi dynasty in Delhi, the worship of the primordial Goddess Durga began in this ancestral thakurdalan (courtyard for worship). Over the course of time, this household has carefully preserved a royal decree or certificate granted by the Mughal Emperor Akbar.

That is not all. During the British era, as a mark of respect for this prestigious aristocratic puja, the British government provided an annual grant of 750 rupees. This grant was so substantial that, after covering all the expenses of the puja, the family members would load the surplus money onto a horse-drawn carriage and send it back to the Serampore treasury or imperial accounts office. Although those golden pages of history now reside in the recesses of memory, this puja, spanning over five and a half centuries, still survives in all its glory.

The Durga idol of the Ghoshal household strictly features the traditional single-frame (ekchala) appearance. The idol-making process begins on the day of Ulturnath with the Kanthamo Puja (worship of the structural bamboo frame). Even the decorative styling carries a subtle, lingering influence from the British era—such as the distinct horse-riding-style lion with elongated eyes and the deep green-colored demon (asura). From the awakening (bodhan) on Sashthi to Dashami, not a single traditional ritual has been altered to this day.

A major attraction of this puja is its intimate and sacred arrangement. No sweets purchased from external shops are ever offered as bhog to the Goddess. The women of the household lovingly prepare handmade sweets (naru) with their own hands, which adorn the Goddess's offering platter. On the evening of Maha Ashtami, the men of the family hold up earthen lamps in their hands, while on the morning of Dashami, the women bid farewell to the Goddess through Konkanjali and immerse themselves in the joyous celebration of sindoor khela. Furthermore, the ancient tradition of offering panta bhat (water-soaked fermented rice) and hilsa fish to the Goddess as a special Dashami bhog is still strictly and devotedly observed.

However, a thrilling and tragic memory is intertwined with the immersion (visarjan) phase of this puja. In the past, the tradition dictated that on the evening of Dashami, boats would be floated in the middle of the Ganges, and a Neelkanth (Indian roller) bird would be released before the idol immersion took place. Many years ago, at the exact moment of the idol immersion in the Bagh-khal area of Konnagar, a tragic incident occurred where a family member lost their life in a tiger attack. Ever since that night, the tradition of mid-river immersion was changed forever. Following a family decision, the custom of immersing the idol earlier than anyone else in the Konnagar region—specifically on the morning of Dashami—was established, a practice that is still strictly followed today.

Alongside religious rituals, this historical thakurdalan was once an open stage for music and the arts. Legendary artists such as Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Hemanta Mukherjee have performed here in the past, singing in this very courtyard. At one time, traditional folk opera (palagan) and theatrical performances (jatra) were hosted here during the days of the puja. While the format of these musical soirées has evolved with time, the love for art has never faded. Nowadays, during the days of the puja, family members enthusiastically roll up their sleeves to organize cultural programs and theatrical plays themselves. This exquisite bridge between ancestral roots and contemporary modernity is what keeps the Durga Puja of the Ghoshal family in Konnagar unique and vibrant to this day.

To visit this historic home, arrive at Konnagar Station and easily reach the location by taking a Toto auto-rickshaw. The house is situated near the Raj Rajeswari Yuva Samiti, and the location is easily accessible on Google Maps.
