(The Mandal Bari Durga Puja, Gondalpara, Chandannagar)

A major example of how Hindu culture blended with Buddhist culture can be seen in the historical Durga Puja of the Mandal family in Gondalpara, Chandannagar. Additionally, several ancient rituals associated with various regions of Central Asia, Abyssinia, and modern-day Afghanistan can be found in this family's puja.
The ancestors of this family were historically involved in the salt and shipping businesses. They even had their own port in Kakdwip, in present-day South 24 Parganas. After their ships sank in a natural disaster in 1824, a family member received a divine dream instructing them to begin the worship of Goddess Durga at home. Although the worship initially started with a sacred pitcher (ghat), the worship of an idol commenced in 1825.
They arrived in Chandannagar by waterway in 1741 and built a residential house featuring a massive worship hall (thakurdalan) by the Ganges, influenced by Western architecture. Since then, the puja has been held in this new house. Due to their good business relations with the French, French gentlemen were invited to the house, and musical gatherings were held in the family drawing room, where the French joined in all the joy and festivities.
Even today, Goddess Uma worshipped by this family is revered according to Vaishnavite traditions, and animal sacrifice (bolipratha) is strictly absent. Goddess Durga, accompanied by her four children, is worshipped here in a single-frame idol (ekchala), where the demon (asura) has green skin. Furthermore, the awakening (bodhan) in this household begins right on the first day (pratipada), and the worship of the bright fortnight continues for ten consecutive days. No other food offerings are made for the first four days; the puja is arranged simply with rice offerings and fruits, and there is a custom of offering food (bhog) every morning and sweets (sheetal) at night. The idol of the Mother Goddess is immersed in the waters of the Ganges.
There are some exceptionally rare and unique features in the rituals of this puja. Five different types of fruits and bunches of fruits are tied to ropes and hung around the temple and the main courtyard. It is believed that many souls descend to the mortal world during the puja, and to prevent wandering or evil spirits from entering the house or touching the plantain bride (kalabou) and the offerings, they are appeased with food beforehand. If any fruit falls from the rope, it is believed that a spirit has accepted that fruit, and a new fruit is immediately tied and hung in its place.
The nabapatrika, commonly known as the kalabou, is not worshipped here as Goddess Durga herself, but rather as the wife of Lord Ganesha—meaning as the daughter-in-law of Goddess Durga. During the Maha Saptami puja, a sacrificial fire (homagni) is lit in this house, which remains burning continuously until Maha Navami. Another rare feature is that for the duration of the puja, the household deities are brought down from the second-floor shrine room and worshipped in the ground-floor thakurdalan. Alongside the household deities Lakshmi and Narayana, there is a unique custom of worshipping and bathing Narayana in the form of a Shaligram Shila and a conch shell filled with water (panishankha), which is rarely seen anywhere else.
Keeping this stream of tradition alive, the current generation of the Mandal family in Chandannagar continues to worship Goddess Uma following the exact same rituals and rules. Nelin Mandal, who came to this house from abroad after marrying the family's current member Ujjal Mandal, is a resident of Belgium who spent a long time in France; although her passport is Belgian, she is essentially French. Though born into the Catholic faith, she converted to Hinduism through marriage and finds no difference between the cultures of the two countries. Coming from abroad and witnessing the unique Durga Puja of this house sparked her intense curiosity, leading her to study and research its rituals. Today, many major responsibilities of the puja rest on her shoulders, and she personally invites people from both India and abroad to attend.
Another special thing I noticed in their 'thakurdalan' is a wooden 'rasmancha' built to hold the Shaligram Shila, standing about 5 feet tall. Various themes from the life of Lord Krishna are depicted on this eight-sided platform using natural herbal dyes. The throne is placed on top of this platform.
Though somewhat faded in its grandeur and brilliance, this Durga Puja—created through a fusion of Chandannagar’s Mandal family architecture, French connections, and diverse elements of world-class ancient culture—continues to uphold its distinct identity and tradition with immense pride.
