কল্পনার তুলিতে আঁকা নন্দনকানন: অবনীন্দ্রনাথের কোন্নগরের বাগানবাড়ি (A Painter's Paradise: Abanindranath Tagore's Garden House in Konnagar)

শুভ্রতার প্রতিমূর্তি একতলা ভবনটি যেন কালের নীরব সাক্ষী। এর শরীরে লেগে আছে অতীতের স্নিগ্ধ পরশ। খড়খড়ির ফাঁক গলে আসা আলোছায়া এক মায়াবী জগৎ তৈরি করে, আর উঁচু উঁচু খিলানগুলি যেন আকাশের দিকে প্রসারিত নীরব আমন্ত্রণ। কড়ি-বর্গার সাবেকি ছাদ ঐতিহ্যের গল্প শোনায়। বাড়ির সম্মুখের সিঁড়িগুলি সর্পিল পথে নেমে গেছে সরাসরি মা গঙ্গার শান্ত স্রোতের অভিমুখে – যেন ভূমি আর অনন্তের এক নিবিড় আলিঙ্গন। ডানদিকের স্নিগ্ধ ঘরে, জানালার শান্ত সান্নিধ্যে, বালক অবনীন্দ্রনাথ মগ্ন তুলির টানে ফুটিয়ে তুলছেন রঙের মায়াজাল। কখনও আবার উদাসীন নয়নে তাকিয়ে থাকেন বহমান নদীর দিকে, তাঁর কিশোর মন কল্পনার অলীক রাজ্যে ডুব দেয় – যেখানে রূপকথারা জীবন্ত হয়ে ওঠে।

দীর্ঘকাল অবহেলায় জীর্ণপ্রায় থাকার পর, অবশেষে পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সরকারের পর্যটন বিভাগ এবং কোন্নগর পৌরসভার সম্মিলিত প্রচেষ্টায় ২০২০ সালের ৫ই মার্চ এই প্রাচীন স্মৃতিসৌধটি নবজীবন লাভ করেছে। গঙ্গার তীরে তারুণ্যের ছোঁয়া লেগেছে। কোন্নগর পৌরসভার একনিষ্ঠ কর্মচারী শুকদেব ঘোষাল আবেগের সঙ্গে জানালেন, “আমরা কিন্তু রীতিমতো কঠিন লড়াই করে এই বাড়িটিকে সেই লাখোটিয়াদের কবল থেকে উদ্ধার করেছি। দীর্ঘ আইনি প্রক্রিয়া চলেছে। না হলে হয়তো এতদিনে এখানেও কোনো লোভী প্রোমোটারের কংক্রিটের জঙ্গল মাথা তুলে দাঁড়াতো, আর তার নিচে চাপা পড়ে যেত কত না অমূল্য স্মৃতিচিহ্ন।”

এই বাগানবাড়ির প্রতিটি ইঁট যেন অবনীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের শৈশবের আনন্দ-বেদনার নীরব সাক্ষী। এখানেই তাঁর শিল্পী জীবনের প্রথম উন্মেষ। ১৯৪৪ সালে প্রকাশিত তাঁর আত্মকথা ‘জোড়াসাঁকোর ধারে’ গ্রন্থে তিনি সগর্বে উল্লেখ করেছেন, এই শান্ত নিভৃত আঙিনায় বসেই তিনি প্রথম কুঁড়েঘরের ছবি আঁকতে শিখেছিলেন। শুধু তাই নয়, স্বয়ং রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের ‘জীবনস্মৃতি’তেও এই মায়াময় স্থানটির উল্লেখ পাওয়া যায়। অবনীন্দ্রনাথ তাঁর স্মৃতিচারণায় লিখেছেন, “কোন্নগরে কি আনন্দেই কাটাতুম।… সেই সেবার কোন্নগরে আমি কুঁড়েঘর আঁকতে শিখি।…” (- জোড়াসাঁকোর ধারে, অবনীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর।)

১৮৭০ সালে রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের অগ্রজ গুণেন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর এই মনোরম বাগানবাড়িটি নির্মাণ করেছিলেন। পিতার কাছ থেকে উত্তরাধিকার সূত্রে এই শান্ত নীড়ের মালিকানা লাভ করেন অবনীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর। অবন ঠাকুরের চিঠিপত্র এবং স্মৃতিকথা থেকে জানা যায়, তাঁর পিতা এই স্বপ্নিল ভিলাটি নির্মাণের জন্য সেই সময়ে মুক্ত হস্তে অর্থ ব্যয় করেছিলেন। শুধু তাই নয়, বাড়ির অন্দরসজ্জা এবং প্রতিটি আসবাবপত্রেও ছিল রুচিশীলতার ছোঁয়া, শিল্পবোধের এক উজ্জ্বল নিদর্শন। প্রকৃতির অপার সৌন্দর্য এবং বাগানবাড়ির রাজকীয় পরিবেশে ছোট্ট শিশু সাহিত্যিকের মনে হতো যেন এক ভিন্ন গ্রহে, এক স্বপ্নিল ভুবনে তিনি তাঁর শৈশব অতিবাহিত করছেন। তাঁর লেখনী আরও জানায়, এই শান্ত আশ্রয়ে নাকি সপ্তাহান্তে গুণীজনদের এক মনোজ্ঞ মিলনমেলা বসতো।

‘জোড়াসাঁকোর ধারে’র পাতায় তিনি একবার লিখেছেন, “রাত জেগে দেখেছি চেয়ে, কাঁঠালতলায় যেন সত্যি কাঠবেড়ালির বিয়ে হচ্ছে, খুদে খুদে আলোর মশাল জ্বালিয়ে এলো তাঁদের বরযাত্রী বরকে নিয়ে, মহা হৈ চৈ, বাদ্যভান্ড, দৌড়াদৌড়ি, হুলুস্থুলু ব্যাপার। সব দেখেছি কল্পনায়। কাঠালতলায় যে জোনাকি পোকা জ্বলছে তখন তা জ্ঞান নেই।” হুগলির এই শান্ত বাগানবাড়িতে বসেই শিল্পীমনের এই আশ্চর্য কল্পনা জন্ম নিয়েছিল। অবন ঠাকুরের আর দোষ কি! এমন মায়াবী পরিবেশে কল্পনাও যে বাস্তবতার রঙে রঙিন হয়ে ওঠে। তাঁর সেই অমর পঙ্‌ক্তিগুলি আজও কাঁঠালবাগানে সযত্নে সংরক্ষিত আছে।

২০১৭ সালে এই ঐতিহ্যপূর্ণ বাগানবাড়িটি হেরিটেজ তকমা পাওয়ার পর থেকে এখানে প্রতিদিন অজস্র মানুষের আনাগোনা লেগেই থাকে। ছুটির দিনে সেই সংখ্যা তিনশো ছাড়িয়ে যায়। এই বাগানবাড়ির তত্ত্বাবধানে থাকা অন্য এক কর্মচারী অমিত চ্যাটার্জি সানন্দে জানান, “মাত্র কয়েকদিনের পথচলায় জনপ্রিয়তার শিখরে পৌঁছে পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সরকারের পর্যটন মানচিত্রে অবনীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের এই শান্ত নীড়টি প্রথম স্থান অধিকার করেছে।”

মূল ভবনের অভ্যন্তরে সযত্নে রক্ষিত আছে অবনীন্দ্রনাথের আঁকা বিভিন্ন বিখ্যাত ছবির রেপ্লিকা। এছাড়াও সেখানে শোভা পায় তাঁর নিজের হাতে আঁকা আত্মপ্রতিকৃতি। তাঁর অনন্য সৃষ্টি ‘কাটুমকুটুম’-এর চমৎকার নিদর্শনও দর্শকদের মুগ্ধ করে তোলে। ভবনের বাঁদিকের পথ ধরে সামান্য এগোলেই চোখে পড়ে একটি প্রাচীন স্নানাগার। প্রধান তত্ত্বাবধায়ক শুকদেববাবু জানান, “এককালে ঠাকুরবাড়ির সদস্যরা এখানেই স্নান করতেন। এখন এই স্বচ্ছ জলে বেশ কিছু কচ্ছপের অবাধ বিচরণ।” এরপর শুকদেববাবু আরও খানিকটা ঘুরে দেখান। বাগানের কোন গাছ কত পুরোনো, কোথায় লুকিয়ে থাকে বিষধর সাপ, কোন ঋতুতে কোন পরিযায়ী পাখির আনাগোনা হয় অথবা কোথায় আয়োজিত হয় বিভিন্ন সাংস্কৃতিক অনুষ্ঠান – একজন অভিজ্ঞ পথপ্রদর্শকের মতোই তিনি সবকিছু বিস্তারিতভাবে বুঝিয়ে বলেন। 

অবাক বিস্ময়ে লক্ষ্য করি, কী অসাধারণ দক্ষতায় তিনি মুখে শব্দ করে পুকুরের রঙিন মাছদের এক জায়গায় আকৃষ্ট করছেন। “সরকারি নিয়ম অনুযায়ী সপ্তাহে একদিন আমাদের ছুটি থাকে। কিন্তু আমি এমনভাবে এই বাগানের প্রতিটি গাছপালা এবং জীবজন্তুর সঙ্গে জড়িয়ে পড়েছি যে ছুটির দিনেও না এসে থাকতে পারি না”, বললেন শুকদেব ঘোষাল।

শুকদেববাবুর এই আন্তরিক টান যে কেবল মুখের কথা নয়, তা ওই কয়েক মুহূর্তেই স্পষ্ট অনুভব করা গেল। কখন যেন আমিও মাদার গাছের স্নিগ্ধ ছায়া এবং গঙ্গার শীতল বাতাসের সঙ্গে একাত্ম হয়ে গেলাম। প্রায় তেরো বিঘা জমির উপর নির্মিত এই বাগানবাড়িটি যেন কালের এক জীবন্ত দলিল। যে দলিলে কেবল হিন্দু ঐতিহ্যের স্বাক্ষরই বিদ্যমান নয়, বরং রয়েছে ইসলামীয় সংস্কৃতির প্রতি শ্রদ্ধার নিদর্শনও। এই বাগানের দক্ষিণ-পূর্ব কোণে আজও সগৌরবে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে সৈয়দ পীর বাবার মাজার। এই অপূর্ব সহাবস্থান যেন বিভেদের মাঝেও এক মহান ঐক্যের বার্তা বহন করে।

কলকাতা থেকে সহজেই পৌঁছানো যায় হুগলি জেলার কোন্নগর ২ নম্বর মীর পাড়া লেনের এই শান্ত আবাসে। হাওড়া স্টেশন থেকে লোকাল ট্রেনে চেপে ষষ্ঠ স্টেশনটি হল কোন্নগর। স্টেশন থেকে টোটো অথবা রিক্সা সহজেই পাওয়া যায়। এছাড়াও সড়কপথে জিটি রোডের উপর মীর পাড়া বাস স্টপেজে নেমে সামান্য হাঁটলেই চোখে পড়বে সেই পুরোনো গলি। গলির মুখেই সগর্বে দাঁড়িয়ে আছে অবনীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের আবক্ষ মূর্তি – যেন স্বয়ং শিল্পী তাঁর প্রিয় বাগানবাড়িটিকে সস্নেহে পাহারা দিচ্ছেন। যে বাড়ির শান্ত অন্দরে কান পাতলে শোনা যায় এক অন্যরকম নিস্তব্ধতা। সোমবার থেকে রবিবার, প্রতিদিন এই ঐতিহাসিক ভবনের দরজা খোলা থাকে আগত দর্শনার্থীদের জন্য। সকাল দশটা থেকে বিকেল পাঁচটা পর্যন্ত যে কেউ টিকিটের বিনিময়ে প্রবেশ করতে পারেন এক শান্তিনিকেতনের স্নিগ্ধ পরিবেশে। আম, জাম, কাঁঠাল, লিচু, বেল সহ বিভিন্ন প্রকার সুস্বাদু ফল এবং বর্ণিল ফুলের সৌরভে মুখরিত থাকে এই চত্বর।

এই তো গেল সেই মায়াবী বাগানবাড়ির কথা। কবিগুরু রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের শেষকৃত্যের স্থান যে নিমতলা মহাশ্মশানের পাশে অবস্থিত, সে কথা অনেকেই অবগত। কিন্তু বহু মানুষ জানেন না, কোন্নগরের নদীর ওপারে, কেলভিন ঘাটের ঠিক পাশেই বরানগর শ্মশানে শেষকৃত্য সম্পন্ন হয়েছিল অবনীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুরের। ২০২২ সালে পৌরসভা থেকে সেই শেষকৃত্যের বেদীটির সংস্কার করা হয়েছে এবং শ্মশানের নামকরণও করা হয়েছে তাঁরই নামে।

A Painter's Paradise: Abanindranath Tagore's Garden House in Konnagar

The pristine white, single-story building stands as a silent witness to time, imbued with the gentle touch of the past. Sunlight and shadow filter through the slatted shutters, creating an enchanting world within, while the lofty arches seem like quiet invitations extending towards the sky. The traditional roof with its wooden beams whispers tales of heritage. The front steps curve downwards, leading directly towards the tranquil flow of the Ganges – a tender embrace between the earth and eternity. In the serene room to the right, near the quiet window, young Abanindranath would immerse himself in the strokes of his brush, weaving magic with colors. At other times, his gaze would drift towards the flowing river, his youthful mind lost in the fantastical realm of imagination, where fairy tales came alive.

After a long period of neglect and disrepair, this ancient memorial was finally revitalized on March 5th, 2020, through the combined efforts of the West Bengal Tourism Department and the Konnagar Municipality. The banks of the Ganges have been touched by a new lease of life. Shukdeb Ghoshal, a dedicated employee of the Konnagar Municipality, passionately recounted, "We fought a truly difficult battle to rescue this house from the clutches of those wealthy individuals. A lengthy legal process ensued. Otherwise, perhaps by now, a concrete jungle of greedy promoters would have risen here, burying countless invaluable historical remnants beneath it."

Every brick of this garden house silently bears witness to Abanindranath Tagore's childhood joys and sorrows. It was here that the first stirrings of his artistic life emerged. In his autobiography 'Jorasankor Dhare,' published in 1944, he proudly mentioned that it was in this peaceful, secluded courtyard that he first learned to draw a hut. Moreover, Rabindranath Tagore himself mentioned this enchanting place in his 'Jibansmriti' (My Reminiscences). Abanindranath wrote in his memoirs, "What joy I spent in Konnagar!... It was during that time in Konnagar that I learned to draw a hut..." (- Jorasankor Dhare, Abanindranath Tagore).

In 1870, Rabindranath Tagore's elder brother, Gunendranath Tagore, built this beautiful garden house. Abanindranath Tagore inherited this tranquil abode from his father. Letters and memoirs of Abanindranath reveal that his father generously spent money to build this dreamlike villa at that time. Furthermore, the interior decoration and every piece of furniture reflected a refined taste, a shining example of artistic sensibility. Surrounded by the boundless beauty of nature and the regal ambiance of the garden house, the young literary prodigy felt as if he were on a different planet, a dreamlike world where he spent his childhood. His writings also mention that this peaceful sanctuary would host delightful gatherings of eminent personalities on weekends.

In the pages of 'Jorasankor Dhare,' he once wrote, "Staying awake at night, I have watched as if a real squirrel wedding was taking place under the jackfruit tree. Tiny torches of light were lit as their wedding procession arrived with the groom, amidst great excitement, music, running around, and commotion. I saw it all in my imagination. I was unaware of the fireflies glowing under the jackfruit tree at that time." It was in this peaceful garden house of Hooghly that this extraordinary imagination of the artist's mind was born. And why not? In such an enchanting environment, even imagination takes on the hues of reality. His immortal lines are still carefully preserved in the jackfruit grove.

Since receiving the heritage tag in 2017, this historic garden house has witnessed a constant flow of visitors. On holidays, that number exceeds three hundred. Amit Chatterjee, another employee overseeing the garden house, happily states, "Within just a few days of its renewed journey, Abanindranath Tagore's peaceful abode has reached the pinnacle of popularity and secured the top position on the West Bengal government's tourism map."

Inside the main building, replicas of Abanindranath's various famous paintings are carefully preserved. His self-portrait, painted by his own hand, also adorns the walls. The exquisite examples of his unique creation, 'Katum Kutum,' also captivate the visitors. A short walk along the path to the left of the building leads to an ancient bathing ghat. The chief caretaker, Shukdeb Babu, explains, "The members of the Tagore family used to bathe here. Now, several turtles freely roam in this clear water." Shukdeb Babu then provides a more detailed tour. Like an experienced guide, he elaborates on the age of each tree in the garden, the hiding places of venomous snakes, the arrival of migratory birds in different seasons, and the venues for various cultural events.

I observe with astonishment his remarkable skill in attracting the colorful fish in the pond to one spot by making sounds with his mouth. "According to government rules, we have one day off a week. But I have become so attached to every plant and animal in this garden that I cannot stay away even on my day off," said Shukdeb Ghoshal.

Shukdeb Babu's heartfelt connection was palpable even in those few moments. I, too, felt a sense of oneness with the gentle shade of the madar tree and the cool breeze from the Ganges. Built on approximately thirteen bighas of land, this garden house is like a living document of time. A document that not only bears the signature of Hindu tradition but also shows respect for Islamic culture. In the southeast corner of this garden still stands the revered shrine of Syed Pir Baba. This wonderful coexistence conveys a message of great unity amidst diversity.

This peaceful abode at 2 Mirpara Lane, Konnagar, Hooghly district, is easily accessible from Kolkata. Konnagar is the sixth station from Howrah Station on a local train. Toto or rickshaws are readily available from the station. Alternatively, by road, one can get off at the Mirpara bus stop on GT Road and walk a short distance to find the old lane. At the entrance of the lane proudly stands a bust of Abanindranath Tagore – as if the artist himself is lovingly guarding his beloved garden house. A house where, if you listen closely to its quiet interiors, you can hear a different kind of stillness.

From Monday to Sunday, the doors of this historic building remain open to visitors every day. From ten in the morning to five in the afternoon, anyone can enter this tranquil, Shantiniketan-like environment by purchasing a ticket. The premises are fragrant with the sweet scents of various delicious fruits like mango, jackfruit, litchi, and bael, as well as colorful flowers.

So, that was the story of that enchanting garden house. Many are aware that the Nimtala crematorium, where the great poet Rabindranath Tagore was cremated, is located nearby. However, many do not know that Abanindranath Tagore's last rites were performed across the river from Konnagar, next to Kelvin Ghat, at the Baranagar crematorium. In 2022, the municipality renovated the cremation platform and renamed the crematorium in his honor.
