বেতড় অধ্যয়ন সম্মিলনী পাঠাগারের শতবর্ষ পূর্তি

হাওড়ার বেতড় অঞ্চলটি কলকাতার থেকেও অনেক বেশি প্রাচীন। মনসামঙ্গল কাব্যে এই স্থানের উল্লেখ পাওয়া যায়। তৎকালীন এক বিখ্যাত নদীবন্দর হিসেবে। পরবর্তীকালে নদী গতিপথ বদল করলে, বন্দরটি অবলুপ্ত হয়। 

১৯২৫ খ্রিস্টাব্দে স্থানীয় বাসিন্দাদের সাহায্যে এখানে বাঁশ, কঞ্চি আর মাটি দিয়ে একটি ঘর বানিয়ে পত্তন করা হয় একটি পাঠাগারের, যার নাম দেওয়া হয় 'তরুণ প্রতিষ্ঠান'। বেতড় তখন জলা-জঙ্গলে ভরা একটা গ্রাম। মূলত এই লাইব্রেরি বানানো হয়েছিল গ্রামের গরীব ছেলেমেয়েদের জন্য। তবে পরবর্তীকালে সশস্ত্র সংগ্রামের কিছু কিছু বিপ্লবীরাও এখানে আশ্রয় নিতেন। 

শ্রদ্ধেয় স্কলার নরেন্দ্রনাথ গাঙ্গুলী এখানে তৈরী করে দেন পাকা ঘর, এবং ১৯২৫ সালের ১৪ই এপ্রিল (পয়লা বৈশাখের দিন) লাইব্রেরীর নতুন নামকরণ করেন "অধ্যয়ন সম্মিলনী"। পূর্ণচন্দ্র চ্যাটার্জী তাঁর বন্ধু মিউনিসিপ্যালিটির চেয়ারম্যানকে অনুরোধ করে লাইব্রেরীর সামনে একটি কেরোসিনের ল্যাম্পপোস্ট বসানোর এবং পাঠাগারের উন্নতির জন্য বাৎসরিক কিছু অনুদানের ব্যবস্থা করেন। 

সেই সময় পাঠাগারের পরিচালন কমিটিতে ছিলেন  নরেন্দ্রনাথ গাঙ্গুলী, সৌরেন্দ্রনাথ কর, নারায়ন চন্দ্র বসু, সূর্বণমোহন বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়, গোপীকৃষ্ণ বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়, ডঃ ভূজেন্দ্রনাথ কর প্রমূখ। এছাড়া যাঁরা পরিচালন সমিতিতে না থাকলেও লাইব্রেরীর উন্নতির জন্য আত্মনিযোগ করেছিলেন, তাঁদের মধ্যে ছিলেন প্রফুল্ল কুমার মুখোপাধ্যায়, হরনাথ বসু, শচীন্দ্র চট্টোপাধ্যায়, অনুকূল চন্দ্র ঘোষ, যোগীন্দ্রনাথ বসু প্রমূখ। এছাড়া হাওড়া পৌরনিগমের প্রামান্য নথি থেকে পাওয়া যায় অরবিন্দ বসু ও মনীন্দ্রনাথ বসুর নাম, যাঁদের অবদান উল্লেখযোগ্য। চল্লিশ দশকে লাইব্রেরী এক আর্থিক সঙ্কটের মধ্যে পড়ে। সাধারণ মানুষের ঐকান্তিক প্রচেষ্টায় লাইব্রেরী সেই সঙ্কট থেকে মুক্তি পায়।

১৯৮১ খ্রিস্টাব্দে পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সরকারের পাঠাগার পরিচালন কার্যক্রম অনুসারে, অধ্যয়ন সম্মিলনী সরকারী ব্যবস্থার আওতায় আনা হয়েছে, যে ব্যবস্থা এখনও চলছে। স্থানীয় মানুষদের ঐকান্তিক সহযোগিতায় এবং লাইব্রেরিয়ান বিপুল চক্রবর্তীর অক্লান্ত পরিশ্রমে আজকে লাইব্রেরির এবং বাড়িটির সংরক্ষণ করা সম্ভব হয়েছে; নতুন করে রং করে, সাজিয়ে তোলা হয়েছে। বর্তমানে এখানে দুঃস্থ ছেলেমেয়েদের জন্য সরকারি প্রবেশিকামূলক পরীক্ষার শিক্ষাদান করা হয়। এছাড়াও ভবিষ্যতে এনাদের পরিকল্পনা রয়েছে, অঞ্চলের প্রবীণ মানুষদের জন্য একটি ভ্রাম্যমাণ লাইব্রেরির সূত্রপাত করার; সাথে সেই বয়স্ক মানুষদের কম্পিউটার শেখানো। 

এই বছর (১৯২৫ খ্রিষ্টাব্দ) ওনাদের ১০০ বছর পূর্ণ হলো। বর্তমানে এখানে সদস্য-সংখ্যা প্রায় ৮০০ জন। এখানে সদস্য পদ বিনামূল্যে গ্রহণ করে, প্রতিদিন বই পড়তে পারেন। পাঠাগারের ঠিকানা :

Centenary Celebration of the Betor Adhyayan Sammilani Library

The Betor area of Howrah is much older than Kolkata. This place is mentioned in the Manasamangal Kavya (a type of Bengali narrative poem) as a famous river port of that time. Later, when the river changed its course, the port disappeared.

In 1925, with the help of local residents, a library was established here in a house made of bamboo, sticks, and mud. It was named 'Tarun Pratisthan' (Young Institution). At that time, Betor was a village full of water bodies and jungles. This library was mainly created for the poor children of the village. However, later on, some revolutionaries involved in the armed struggle also took shelter here.

The respected scholar Narendranath Ganguly built a permanent house here, and on April 14, 1925 (the first day of the Bengali month of Boishakh), the library was renamed "Adhyayan Sammilani" (Study Association). Purna Chandra Chatterjee requested his friend, who was the Chairman of the Municipality, to install a kerosene lamp post in front of the library and to arrange for some annual grants for the library's improvement.

During that time, the managing committee of the library included Narendranath Ganguly, Sourendranath Kar, Narayan Chandra Basu, Surbarnamohan Bandyopadhyay, Gopikrishna Bandyopadhyay, and Dr. Bhujendranath Kar, among others. Besides those on the managing committee, individuals who dedicated themselves to the library's development included Prafulla Kumar Mukhopadhyay, Haranath Basu, Sachindra Chattopadhyay, Anukul Chandra Ghosh, and Jogindranath Basu. Additionally, records from the Howrah Municipal Corporation mention the significant contributions of Arabinda Basu and Manindranath Basu. In the 1940s, the library faced a financial crisis. It was saved from this crisis through the sincere efforts of the local people).

In 1981, according to the library management program of the West Bengal government, Adhyayan Sammilani was brought under the government system, which continues to this day. With the sincere cooperation of the local people and the tireless efforts of the librarian, Mr. Bipul Chakraborty, it has been possible to preserve the library and its building. It has been newly painted and decorated. Currently, free coaching for government entrance exams is provided here for underprivileged children. They also plan to start a mobile library for the elderly people of the area in the future, along with teaching those senior citizens computer skills.

This year (2025) marks their 100th anniversary. Currently, there are about 800 members here. Anyone can become a member for free and read books daily. The library's address is:
